Naples & Pompeii
(Monday, 05 October 2009) Written by Keith Rhoades

Well, I'll keep it quick...my minutes dwindle fast as the satellite connection is somewhat slow.   After I last wrote, Craig and I got all settled on the ship....I bought a fountain card for $82 so I can unlimited sodas on the ship....have to drink at least 3 a day to make it worth my while.  Of course the first night after dinner did a little gambling and broke even and then went to the midnight buffett.

Sunday I woke up at 6:30 am and went to the gym and ran 5 miles on the treadmill so I wouldn't feel guilty about eating.  Then Craig and I went to breakfast and got off the ship.  I promised to take Craig to Pompeii since I had been there before and we didnt want to do a tour and go on the cheap.  We got off the ship and I negotiated a cab to the train station and then we hopped a train to Pompeii along th Amalfi Coast toward Sorrento.  We arrived at Pompeii and toured the ruins for about 2 hours...lots of walking, and hot..but very  moving to see the cast of the bodies frozen in time from the explosion of Mt. Vesuvius in 70 AD.   very poignant and tragic.   We then got back on the train to Naples and walked through the city and got back on the cruise ship and we did it for $60 less per person than if we had done the organized tour....it was fun to show Craig how to navigate around.   Once back on the ship....Craig went to the gym and I just hung out...gambled a little, laid out in the sun deck.

We went to the evening show on the cruise ship and  Craig and I got back to the cabin at 11 pm and ordered a whole pizza and ice cream and talked until 2:30 in the morning about God, life, purpose, philosophy.

Today I woke up and went to the travel talk to find out about the next three ports.  Today is a day at sea and I'm really looking forward to that...just to relax.   I'm going to shop, gamble, and relax.    And of course the show.  I may also go to the late night adult comedy show.  Tomorrow we arrive in Dubrovnik, Croatia!

This trip is really different...besides it being more luxury and not backpacking it also raises the good things and the challenges of traveling with someone and I have to admit after just a few days I am actually learning a lot about myself...my shortcomings and my strengths.  Also...this trip is forcing me to "relax"..and have some down time just to think and I realized I like to stay busy because I don't like to face certain facts and truths about my life...my hopes...my desires and I'm realizing in my quiet alone time there are some things I need to work on and to change in my life upon my return.

Well,  i hope that all of you are well and am grateful for each of you in my life and what you have added to my life.  And I'm grateful I can bring you along with me via the internet.  Until the next time...peace and love.
